Hundreds of Teachers Line-Up to Collect Free Books This Holiday Season

More Books Needed for Underserved Students, Classroom Libraries to Help Weather Tough Economic Times
SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 9

WHAT: Hundreds of Bay Area teachers will be waiting for Resource
Area for Teaching (RAFT) to open its doors this Saturday,
December 12th. Each teacher who is a member of RAFT will
be eligible to collect free books this holiday season as
part of The Gift of Reading program, which is sponsored
by The San Jose Mercury News.

In partnership with Comerica Bank, RAFT's collection of
the books has been extended until December 16th. RAFT and
Comerica Bank are enlisting the help of communities to
ensure that there are enough books to meet demand this
holiday season.

As part of the program, www.MyBookBuyer.com, the only
online buyer of Scholastic chapter books has donated
numerous books for distribution to RAFT member teachers.

However, more books are still needed. With the current
state of the economy, there is an overwhelming demand for
books, especially Vietnamese and Spanish titles.

The 35 drop-off points for the books are currently listed
online at www.raft.net and www.mercurynews.info/gor.
These drop-off points include RAFT San Jose at 1355
Ridder Park Drive, San Jose, CA 95131 and RAFT Redwood
City at 101 Twin Dolphin Drive, Redwood City, CA 94065 as
well as 21 selected Comerica Bank branches across
Alameda, Santa Cruz and Santa Clara counties.

WHEN: Saturday, December 12th
-- The distribution of books will begin at 11:00 am, when
RAFT opens its doors for shopping, and end at 4:00 pm.

Each RAFT member teacher will be able to select up to 30
titles for their classroom libraries.

WHERE: RAFT San Jose, 1355 Ridder Park Drive, San Jose, CA 95131

RAFT offers interactive, hands-on learning solutions. By
using these low cost solutions from RAFT, Bay Area
teachers, educators and administrators can address
California's budget challenges, all the while reinforcing
Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)
education for pre-K through 12 students.

MEDIA: If you would like to conduct a live shot/interview,
spokespeople will be available.
